Across India, thousands of children and youth still lack access to basic reading material, storybooks, or even a quiet space to learn. We at Safe Hands Rehabilitation Society (SHRS) are building community-driven, zero-cost, open libraries in slums, rural areas, schools, parks, and roadside shelters.
Let’s open the world of books — one trunk, one mat, one child at a time.

What We’re Doing
As our first milestone, we are setting up 7 pilot Open Libraries by October 2025 in collaboration with local NGOs, youth clubs, Red Cross centres, volunteers and educational institutions, resident societies and religious places. These libraries will serve as model reading hubs in under-resourced neighborhoods across Punjab and Chandigarh, paving the way for scalable and replicable setups across North India. Your early support can help us build these first 7 as shining examples of community-driven literacy.
We are setting up 50+ Open Libraries across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh by October 2026.
Each Library Includes
A community trunk Or box Or almira filled with 200+ books (children’s books, school material, storybooks, and other inspirational books)
Seating mat or carpet for shared reading | Upcycled shelves from crates or recycled wood | Community volunteer librarian & reading clubs | Regular storytelling and youth-led reading events | Optional digital section with old phones/tablets for audiobooks and PDFs
